Who we are

Hepburn Architecture and Technology is the product of Matt Hepburn’s broad architectural experience. It is a new type of design studio based on the recognition that the construction industry is getting left behind by more nimble industries. While construction accounts for 37% of global emissions, the sector has been slow to innovate.

We see a massive opportunity. To think and work in modern ways that create space for creativity, novel ideas, and – ultimately – better architecture. Working with quality materials and intricate detailing we produce calm, minimal spaces that leave room for occupants to layer their lives over the top.

The most important material we work with is light, and we make it central to all our projects. By thinking deeply and holistically, we create spaces that are complete – the elements fit together in harmony. Our methods exist in service of our goal: to create beautiful architecture.

We leverage an integrated suite of digital and physical tools to deliver beautiful spaces, fit for our times, and for the people who will dwell in them. When we find that the tools we need do not exist, we aspire to create them ourselves.

Process

Listen - All of our work starts with listening as our foundation. We use our experience to help our clients articulate their aims for a project. These aims are the seeds for our process.

Conceptualise - We believe that the best projects have a coherent concept that defines a consistent theme and language. We begin to shape that concept.

Iterate - At the heart of the process is iterative development. We evolve the overarching project vision and develop detailed designs for every element within it. Through several iterations, we hone in on the best solutions together with our clients.

Review - As the vision for each part of the project crystallises we review it, both internally and with the client. We do not believe in settling for good solutions when better solutions exist.

Perfect - Ahead of major deadlines we take time to perfect project documentation. Rigorous preparation makes life easier for planners and contractors, supporting smooth project delivery.

Ethic

Our ethics are essential to how we work at haat. We have the privilege to shape the physical world, and that comes with a responsibility to have a positive influence – both in our work’s contribution to the built environment, and in how we execute it. Ultimately, this comes down to how we treat the people we interact with, and how we treat the planet we share.

Equality and equity - At haat we are committed to promoting both equality and equity. We will treat all our clients, collaborators and employees with respect and will not treat people differently due to who they are or how they move through the world. We seek out work that will lead to a fairer, more supportive society. This is not somehting we believe will happen without concerted effort.

Climate - we are committed to limiting the effects our built work has on the climate. We believe it is essential to harness emerging technologies, both digitally and in the construction process to deliver on this commitment.

Our approach to reducing the carbon impact of projects is to be thoughtful and data driven from the start. Being proactive allows projects to be environmentally focused at their core in both beautiful and unglamourous ways. We strive to improve the performance of buildings while reusing as much of the existing fabric of the building as possible.

Technology - By leveraging contemporary technology we can streamline our design processes. This leaves more time for creative thought, allowing us to iterate many more times on a design proposal. We can dive deeper into a project and find higher quality solutions in less time. We are also interested in deploying and creating novel construction technologies that help projects come to life faster and in new ways.

Craft -The reality of putting a building together means that we must also rely on traditional construction methods. By working alongside talented makers we put balance into our work and retain space for intimacy and craft.

Clients

Ultimately, at the centre of everything we do, is the client. Without you there is no project. We strive to build relationships that empower our clients to contribute as collaborators, in whatever ways that work for them.

As we work together to deliver a special project, it does mean that you carry certain obligations as our client to ensure the project is a success. We will make sure what we need is clear at every step, but includes for example providing feedback or approval on a design by a certain date. In our experience, projects are most successful when we have a single point of contact for approval and review, and that the appointment of an executive decision maker from the client team supports a streamlined and successful process. We will work with you throughout the design process to ensure we are on the same page and working towards the same goal.

Construction

We will help you to build a talented construction team and can work with our network of skilled professionals or with builders you have worked with in the past and trust. We will be on hand to ensure the design you want is turned into reality and navigate any disputes that may arise.
